Traverse

You don't visit the Accursed Mountains. You cross them. Six days of self-powered hut-to-hut ski touring from Kosovo into Albania and Montenegro: 800–1,200m of ascent a day with a pack, no lifts, and a freeride descent every day.

The Traverse

Skin Up in Kosovo.
Ski Down into
Albania.

The Accursed Powder Traverse is Snowbusters' most adventurous expedition — a hut-to-hut crossing of the Bjeshkët e Namuna, the wild Prokletije or Accursed Mountains, from Kosovo into Albania and on to Montenegro over six touring days. It is a point-to-point mountain expedition where the skiing is how you cross the range, through terrain far outside conventional ski tourism.

This is ski touring as it was meant to be done. Expect 800–1,200 vertical metres of climbing a day on touring skis or splitboard, followed by descents through varied terrain — open alpine bowls, gladed forests, steep couloirs and rolling meadows. No snowcat, no resort, no groomed runs: no lifts, marked pistes or resort infrastructure anywhere on the route.

Each day ends in a traditional shepherd hut or family-run mountain shelter, with a wood fire and a meal the group cooks together from provisions stocked in advance.

01
True Hut-to-Hut Traverse

Move through the mountains, not back to the same base. A point-to-point journey between traditional huts in remote valleys — the classic high-mountain expedition format.

02
Three Countries on Skis

Skin up in Kosovo, freeride into Albania and cross into Montenegro — over the borders on your own power, with no lifts and no shortcuts.

03
Earn Every Turn

No lifts, no cat, no shortcuts: 800–1,200m of climbing with a pack on each of six consecutive touring days, and a freeride descent to the next hut.

04
Gjeravica — 2,656m

The summit day, conditions permitting. Skin from the hut to Kosovo's highest peak, then descend around 1,100m back into the mountains.

05
Hut Life

Shepherd huts and family-run mountain shelters, stocked before you arrive. Wood fires, group cooking with local ingredients and basic sleeping quarters: simple, and part of the expedition.

Who It's For

Who This
Traverse Is For

The Accursed Powder Traverse is for intermediate to advanced freeriders who already tour, not groomed-slope skiers or snowboarders. You need touring skills, the fitness for daily ascents of 800–1,200m with a pack on six consecutive days, and genuine off-piste experience. This is an expedition, not a holiday.

01

Freeriders F2 to F3 ← This Traverse

Comfortable in varied off-piste conditions and freeriding in remote, unpatrolled terrain, and able to carry out a companion rescue.

02

Experienced Tourers (T1 to T2) ← This Traverse

Previous touring experience, the fitness for 800–1,200m of ascent a day with a pack on six consecutive days, and a taste for basic but genuine mountain huts over luxury.

03

Catskiers — Try This First

If you prefer snowcat access to self-powered ascents, our Accursed Cat-Ski Expedition is the right entry point: same mountains, different format.

The Traverse

What the Traverse
Demands & Delivers

01

Touring Fitness & Technique

  • 800–1,200m of ascent per touring day with a loaded pack
  • Skinning technique on varied terrain — open snowfields and steeper approaches
  • Transition efficiency — the traverse moves; slow transitions cost daylight
  • Multi-day mountain stamina — 6 consecutive full days in remote terrain
02

Expert Safety & Navigation

  • Your guide navigates the full traverse — no marked routes exist
  • Daily snowpack assessment as the route crosses three countries
  • Full companion rescue capability required from every group member
  • Emergency protocols designed for remote, three-country terrain
03

Freeride Descents

  • 6 full days of self-earned freeride descents
  • Gjeravica summit descent — around 1,100m of high-alpine terrain
  • North-facing descent into Albania — long, with cold maritime snow when conditions align
  • Final valley run from the Montenegro ridge to Vusanje village

Kosovo → Albania → Montenegro

The Traverse, Day by Day

Kosovo, then Albania, then Montenegro: the traverse moves point to point across the three-country ridge system. Daily distance and ascent vary with conditions and snowpack. The guide adapts the route, and the summit and the border crossings happen only when the conditions and the group allow, but the overall direction and progression stay linear.

Remote Terrain.
Serious Preparation.

Accursed Mountains destination

Remote. Three Countries. Serious Safety.

This traverse crosses remote, unpatrolled terrain in three countries, where professional emergency response may be hours away. That is why every participant needs full avalanche equipment and companion rescue capability, and why the guide makes every route and go/no-go decision.

We aim to run the traverse with a Snowbusters guide (Jany or Adam) together with a local guide.

The route, including the Gjeravica summit and both border crossings, depends on the conditions. The guide adapts the line and the daily distance to the snowpack, the weather and the group.

Travel and medical insurance is not included. We strongly recommend Alpenverein (Austrian Alpine Club) insurance — valid internationally, including Kosovo, Albania and Montenegro, and covering helicopter rescue.
