Sunnmøre
Steep
& Deep
Ski from summit to sea. Five days of mobile freeride touring through Norway's Sunnmøre Alps: sleep at the trailhead in a motorhome basecamp, chase the best snow, and climb 1,000–1,500m a day for descents that end at the fjord. We don't follow the itinerary. We follow the snow.

The Sunnmøre Alps sit on the western coast of Norway — a range of dramatic coastal peaks that rise straight out of the fjords. The result is some of the world's most spectacular ski runs: summit-to-sea descents where you skin up 1,000–1,500 vertical metres and ski all the way down to the water's edge.
This trip is all about maximising your time on snow, in quality and quantity. Each day you skin up to freeride lines, from wide-open snowfields to steep, technical couloirs. Forget lift lines — touring unlocks the best descents straight from the mountain.
Snowbusters runs it from fully equipped motorhomes, and they are the reason the trip works. The mountains spread across dozens of fjord arms and conditions vary peak to peak, so the motorhomes chase the best zones and you wake up right at the trailhead. If one fjord is bad, we move. We don't follow the itinerary. We follow the snow. Expert guides coach you on touring technique, avalanche safety and confident big-mountain riding.

- DOWN Skis Demo
Ski from the summit all the way down to sea level, conditions permitting. It is what the Norwegian fjord mountains are known for.
The motorhomes are why this trip works. No fixed hotel, no fixed valley: the base moves every 2–3 days to follow the best conditions, and you wake up at the trailhead.
If one fjord is bad, the motorhomes move. If one aspect is loaded, we choose another. If conditions change, the plan changes.
Up to 1,500m of climbing on skins each touring day, 6–8 hours in the mountains, five days in a row, followed by long descents.
Shared motorhomes sleeping 3–4, self-catering and cooking with your crew. Simple living for a week, with a fjord view at breakfast.
Test the latest DOWN freeride touring skis on long Norwegian descents, not in a parking lot, and know which ski to buy for next season.

Freeriders F2 to F3 with Some Touring (T1) ← This Trip
Confident on black runs and in variable off-piste snow, fit, and with some touring behind you. You don't need years of touring experience, and the guides calibrate the terrain to the group.
Experienced Tourers (T2) ← This Trip
Experienced tourer or freerider ready to push their limits on bigger Norwegian objectives and gain real mountain independence — the summit-to-sea days and island peaks require commitment and strong fitness.
Piste Only or Never Toured — Not Yet
You need to be comfortable off-piste and to have toured before. The touring days cover 1,000–1,500m of ascent, so fitness is non-negotiable. New to touring? Start with our Intro into Ski Touring & Splitboarding course.
The Motorhome Format
- Sleep at the trailhead — no commute, maximum time on snow
- Modern, fully equipped motorhomes with heating, a basic kitchen and storage
- The base moves every 2–3 days to follow the best conditions
- A cosy, social atmosphere and breakfast with a fjord view
Spring Norwegian Touring
- Spring: long daylight, firn snow that softens perfectly mid-morning

- 1,000–1,500m of vertical ascent per day on touring skis or splitboard
- Five consecutive touring days across different fjord arms and peaks
Coaching & Avalanche Safety
- Companion rescue refresh before any serious terrain
- Daily snowpack and weather assessment before every ascent
- Route selection adapted to Norwegian spring avalanche conditions
- Coaching on touring efficiency, route planning and steep line control
Fly In, Drive Out, Wake Up in the Mountains
Travel to Ålesund — fly in (often via Oslo), or arrive by train or bus. The group collects the motorhomes, loads gear and follows the guide to the first base, parked close to the trailhead of Day 2's objective. Full avalanche safety briefing, then the first Norwegian fjord view from the motorhome window. Tomorrow the skins go on early.
Skins On Early — Norway Opens Up
The first touring day is the guide's calibration run — a well-chosen peak that gives a full read on the group's fitness and technique before the week builds. Around 1,000m of ascent with companion rescue drills on the snowfield, then the first full descent of the trip. Norwegian spring snow at its finest: firm in the morning, softening perfectly by mid-morning, with the fjord visible from the summit.
Deeper Into Sunnmøre
Day 3 steps up to a more serious peak, with a longer ascent and bigger descents. The guide looks for the north-facing aspects that held the best preserved powder from the week's snowfall, and the terrain starts to feel properly committing. In the evening the motorhomes move on — typically a 1–3 hour drive — to the base for the Big Day.
1,500m Up — All the Way to the Sea
Day 4 is the week's biggest physical and visual day. The guide selects the trip's largest objective — a peak that allows a full summit-to-sea descent: skin from sea level, climb around 1,500m, and ski all the way back down to the fjord. This is what Sunnmøre is famous for. Long, sustained and visually staggering.
An Island Peak — Water on Every Side
Sunnmøre's fjord islands offer something extraordinary: ski peaks surrounded by ocean on all sides. Conditions permitting, the guide picks a classic island objective for Day 5 — reached by road or a short boat transfer. The descent returns to sea level with open water visible in every direction.
Last Skins — Ride to the End
The final touring day belongs to the group — riders choose the week's best line to repeat, or the guide picks a send-off objective that captures everything Sunnmøre offers. One last summit, one last descent to the fjord. Then the motorhomes head back towards Ålesund for a group dinner in town to close the week properly.
Ålesund Old Town, Then the World
Morning in Ålesund — the Art Nouveau waterfront town is one of Norway's most beautiful. A final coffee overlooking the archipelago before the motorhome return and onward travel. The Sunnmøre Alps have a way of pulling people back.

Norwegian Mountain Safety
Norwegian fjord mountains are unpatrolled, remote, and subject to rapidly changing spring conditions. Your guide, an IFMGA/UIAGM-certified mountain guide or an experienced ski touring guide, assesses the snowpack and weather every day before any ascent begins. Norwegian spring avalanche risk is real and location-specific — the daily assessment is the only factor that decides where the group goes.
All objectives depend on the weather, the snow and the group. The summit-to-sea day and the island peak described on this page are examples of what the week can include, not a promise.
Insurance is not included: your personal travel insurance must cover backcountry skiing. We recommend Austrian Alpine Club (Alpenverein) insurance — valid in Norway and covering mountain rescue.
