The Shar Mountains of North Macedonia sit where three countries meet, in the heart of the Balkans. Up to 2,747m. 550 km² of open high-alpine terrain, powder-filled couloirs, open bowls and pine forest runs. No lift queues, no resort crowds, and very little ski traffic.
The Shar Mountain Shift is Snowbusters' high-volume Balkan powder week: two full days of cat-skiing, then four days of guided freeride touring where the snowcat handles the approach to the national park touring area and you use your legs where they matter, getting to the lines beyond. Based near Popova Šapka, you ride up to 3,000 vertical metres on the full cat-ski days.
Expert local guides with deep knowledge of the terrain and snow lead every day, with avalanche safety equipment included and personalised coaching and video analysis to sharpen your freeride and touring skills. After the mountain, relax in a 4-star hotel with spa and sauna, full board and warm Macedonian hospitality.

Tour further, ski more. On four days the snowcat handles the approach to the national park touring area, and you use your legs where they matter: getting to the lines beyond.
Up to 3,000 vertical metres on each of the two full cat-ski days. No lift queues, no resort boundaries.
Cat skiing, pine forest, the Titov Vrv summit, couloirs, the open powder plateau and the group's favourite terrain: a different mountain day every day, conditions permitting.
One of the week's big objectives, conditions permitting. Snowcat as high as it can go, then skin and bootpack to the summit before a 1,000m freeride descent.
Serious mountain days, comfortable nights. Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner every day, with spa, sauna and gym for recovery and hearty Macedonian cooking.
Thinking about a new freeride setup? Test DOWN skis for a full week in real powder, touring and steep terrain, not for two runs at a demo centre.

Land in Skopje, Wake Up in the Mountains
Fly into Skopje International Airport and take the shared transfer — a scenic drive of about two hours, with your first views of Macedonia's mountains on the way. Check in, meet the group, gear check, and the Shar briefing over a welcome dinner.
Into the Shar — First Tracks
The snowcat picks up the group at 08:30. Morning companion rescue refresh in the snowfield, then the guide calibrates terrain to the group's level across the first runs. The Shar is different to the Alps — open, rounded, and big. By the afternoon you're reading it and riding it with confidence.
Pine Forest Descents — Protected & Playful
The first cat-assisted touring day. The snowcat drops the group at the touring area, and from there you skin up for long, sheltered treeline descents through old-growth pine. When conditions on the high plateau are variable, the forest is often at its best — the guide picks lines weaving through the trees to the valley.
Titov Vrv 2,747m — Shar at Its Finest
Conditions permitting, Day 4 is the big summit push. The snowcat takes you as high as it can, then you skin and bootpack to the ridge at 2,747m — North Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania stretching to the horizon. Then the descent from Titov Vrv: around 1,000m of freeride vertical.
Natural Couloirs — Shar's Hidden Steep
The Shar is known for its open plateau, but it hides a network of natural couloirs on its east and northeast faces — lines of up to 35–40° that drain into powder fields below. When the snowpack allows, the snowcat takes the group to the touring area, you skin and bootpack to the entries, and the guide picks the best options for the conditions and the group and takes everyone through entries and descents methodically.
550 km² of Open High Pasture
The Shar's defining feature is its scale — 550 km² of high-altitude open terrain above the treeline. Day 6 is the powder day: wide-open runs with no obstacles, deep snow on the north-facing aspects, and the snowcat delivering run after run from the same high point.
One Last Day of Your Favourite Terrain
The final riding day is a cat-assisted touring day built around the terrain the group loved most — forest, couloirs or open pasture, whatever the conditions allow. The guide plans the day around the group's choice, there's a celebration lunch on the mountain, and the snowcat brings everyone home.
Goodbye Shar, See You Next Year
Breakfast, check-out, and the shared transfer back to Skopje International Airport. Allow for the roughly two-hour drive when you book your flight home.
Remote Mountain,
Full Safety Cover

Safety First. Always.
The Shar is unpatrolled terrain — which is exactly what makes it special, and exactly why safety is non-negotiable. Two guides, one from Snowbusters and one local, assess conditions every day, every rider carries the avalanche kit included in the package, and we operate within the guides' strict go/no-go framework.
There is usually a lead guide and a tail guide. The group can be split when levels, fitness or wishes differ, if that is needed or wanted.
The steep terrain described on this page, including the couloirs of up to 35–40° and the Titov Vrv summit, is the maximum, not a promise for every week. Conditions come first, then the level and wishes of the group.
Travel and medical insurance is not included. We recommend Austrian Alpine Club (Alpenverein) insurance, which includes mountain rescue cover.
